Jonathan Phillips
Jonathan, a loyal servant to The Voyagers in our Sevens activities and, whilst as captain at the 2019 Old Pens Sevens dislocated and fractured his wrist in the final and needed to see a specialist. He was in a plaster cast for 6 weeks and, as an electrician in a 3-man firm, he was only entitled to statutory sick pay at £94.25 per week until he could work again. Jonathan normally earned c.£500 per week, had a mortgage and numerous bills to pay. Unfortunately, he did not have insurance nor could he look to his club Aberavon RFC for assistance as he was playing outside of the season.
Jonathan has been a massive supporter of The Voyagers as player/captain/ambassador and in recent years has helped build a squad now capable of elite level 7’s on a regular basis. The Committee agreed that he met our criteria for short term financial support, and we made an initial payment of £2000 with a further £1000 due to ongoing issues with his injury.
