The Raphael Sweeney Trust
November 2008
On 16th November 2008, a fund-raising ‘Curry with Campo’ lunch was held at Old Deer Park in aid of the above and Nigel Rees and Edgar Thomas presented a cheque for £500 payable to the Trust to Raphael’s widow Lainey on behalf of The Voyagers. An amount of around £8000 was raised on the day and this was added to a previous Voyagers donation of £1000.
Raphael Sweeney was known to many members, having played for The Voyagers on a number of occasions during the late 80’s and early 90’s.
A Merthyr boy through and through, Raphael was a tough and uncompromising flanker, who made many first-team appearances for London Welsh and also captained The Druids for several seasons.
Following a 2-year illness, which placed tremendous financial strain on the family, Raphael sadly passed away, on 17 October 2008. He is survived by his wife Lainey and their 4 young children, Ned, Lily, Jonty and Kitty.
