Colin Hill

Thursday, 7th March 2024

It is sad to report that Colin left us on Sunday, March 3rd. He had lived for many years in Haywards Heath, West Sussex closely supported by the Broster family. He had maintained his independence, however, typically not wishing to burden anyone.

During the latter part of the twentieth century, the Voyagers and Colin Hill were synonymous. He joined in the early 70’s, became Assistant secretary in 1975, Secretary in 1976 – a position he held unbroken until 1999. Fittingly, he was elected President for our Jubilee year in 2004. He became a Life member in the same year.

His involvement was legendary. Together with his late wife, Dilys, he attended to all those unseen, untold but necessary chores so essential to our continued success. He will be remembered in particular for his organisation of our Sevens teams to various tournaments, too many to be listed here but especially to Amsterdam where he managed teams for fourteen years. The committee of the Heiniken tournament recognised his contribution in the official brochure on one occasion.

And who will forget the coach tours to Cardiff for the internationals. Precise arrangements with every detail covered and the quite unique hospitality, the ‘antifreeze’ was frequently more looked forward to morethan the game.

We have lost a legend.

D. Edgar Thomas.
